Data Center Temperature Monitoring

Monitoring data centre temperatures and HVAC equipment

If left unchecked, overheating can quickly bring a fully functional computer room to a screeching halt. Equipment generates heat and increased temperatures can indicate a variety of problems. This could include a faulty CRAC/CRAH or cooling unit, leaking coolant lines, loss of utility power or restricted airflow. Or, your recently added server pod may now require additional cooling under the new load.

Richcomm offers solutions for monitoring the ambient air temperature in server rooms and server racks. However, monitoring temperature alone does not allow for early detection of the cause of the problem. Perhaps the server room will get hot within minutes, leaving you scrambling to find out what's going on. It could be anything from the server itself to a power supply, a cold air supply, a blocked air chamber, a bad fan... Anything. Soon you'll be considering the possibility of shutting down your server before it overheats.
Rising temperatures indicate a problem, but a data centre environmental monitoring system helps to prevent problems from the outset. Let's start with the cooling system. Many CRAC/CRAH systems have built-in alarm fault panels. These can be connected to any Richcomm system to send an alarm if your cooling system detects an internal problem.

Predicting workloads and heat generation in data centres is not easy today. Traditionally, computer rooms have had predictable heat patterns associated with work schedules and workloads. However, today's larger data centres have more dynamic workloads. Applications can easily move from one server to another, resulting in changes in CPU usage. This means more heat from server to server and from row to row. The best way to monitor temperatures depends on the size of the room and the concentration of heat sources.

There is probably no better example of a monitoring need than an IT/server room and data center environment. We all know how sensitive servers, switches, blade centers, and other network infrastructure are to temperature changes, airflow, the presence of water, and voltage fluctuations.

We invest in high-end air conditioners  (sometimes not so high-end) and other equipment to keep these environments running at their best, but what if those things fail, or worse, are slowly failing. Temperatures start to slowly rise, devices start to heat up, fans spin faster, trying to keep everything cool, until a critical tolerance point is reached, and everything starts shutting down. Everyone in your organization or company is down now; no one can access mission-critical applications, shares, files, email, or even make and receive calls due to outages on digital phone lines. Your company only suffers from downtime, and in most cases, servers and other equipment can and will be damaged, depending on when the failure is discovered.

Bottom line; this can be expected and avoided with some server rack temperature sensors. Unfortunately, many of our clients have experienced this and are with us for that very reason.

We provide complete and fully customizable/scalable solutions to monitor server rack temperatures and most importantly, if adverse environmental conditions occur in your server room, data center or any other critical area you wish to monitor, we will Remind you.
